Battle Ground 36 Kent-Meridian 12

Sep 7, 2015

Battle Ground started off the 2015 high school football season with a bang!

The Tigers only needed one offensive play to put up their first touchdown of the year. On a double pass from WR Kyle Cahoon to fellow WR Max Randle went for 87 yards and a quick 7-0 Battle Ground lead at host Kent-Meridian.

However, the Royals also only needed one play to score when RB Malik Wooleery scampered 78 yards for the touchdown. However a missed extra point keep the Tigers in the lead for good.

Despite that 78 yard, a revamped Tigers defense allowed negative 9 yards rushing on the Royals next 9 rush attempts in the first half and only allowed one completed pass prior to the break.

Battle Ground’s Curtis Stradley ran in his first of two 1 yard rushing touchdowns on the game in the first quarter putting Battle Ground up 13-6 after one.

The second half was all Tigers. QB Gunner Talkington went deep to WR Reiley Betcher in the third quarter for a 72 yd touchdown strike, then after Stradley’s second touchdown run, Talkington hit WR Cole Grossman from 11 yards out to put BG up 34-6 in the forth quarter.

After Kent-Meridian’s lone sustained scoring drive of the game, the Tigers defense capped off the night with a safety forcing an intentional grounding flag when DL Trevor Geiger gave chase to Benjamin Woods.

Talkington finished the night 22-26 passing for 259 yards and 2 TD’s with 1 interception. The Tigers rushed the ball for an additional 174 yards including 74 yards from Stradley and 75 from Bailey Buckner. The defense held Kent-Meridian to only 13 rushing yards after the initial breakdown led to the Royals long touchdown run early.

In addition to the stout rush defense, the Tigers secondary snagged 3 picks on the afternoon. Max Randle, Tommy Renfore and Austin Adams all picked off Woods at some point in the game.
